Penance

I'm studying the Marvel heroes Civil War- there is a superhero (Speedball- terrible name) who falls to supervillain.  He then seeks to redeem himself and becomes Penance- a superhero whose powers only work when he is in extreme pain (he thus self-mutilates).  I'm hoping to do a paper on pain and power in comic books (or disability as super ability in comics-- i.e. Daredevil, Oracle, mutants as disabled, etc.) and the Superhuman Registration Act, which is one of the stressors bringing about the Civil War:
